'Rouletii'(Pronounced: Rue-LET-tee-e) |
| 'Centifolia Minimia' , R. X Centifolia Minimia , 'Rouletii' |
'Rouletii' is a very small shrub with a nearly continuous display of very small (1/2") beautifully shaped flowers. | The double lilac-pink blooms are nicely displayed against the dark green foliage. |
The individual petals of the blooms reflex slightly along their long axis giving the appearance of star-like flowers with rounded tips on their petals. | 'Rouletii' makes an excellent low hedge (1' to 3') that is almost contstantly in bloom. |
'Rouletii' hips are pea-sized and bright orange. It produces abundant hips starting in mid summer if not deadheaded. |
| GENERAL INFORMATION: | 'Rouletii' is a China rose and a variety of R. chinensis minima, but it was discovered growing in a pot in a cottage window box in Switzerland, far from its native habitat. It is the first of the miniature roses. This rose, or one similar to it, originated in China and a miniature version was brought to Europe prior to 1818, where it became popular as a potted plant and was grown indoors. Subsequently, interest in these roses faded. In 1918, a Swiss physician and medical officer named Major Roulet discovered specimens growing in pots in a Swiss village and was told that they had been grown there for many years. |

| PROPAGATION: | 'Rouletii' is easily propagated from cuttings. |
| OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: | Because of its small size, 'Rouletii' is perfect for containers and low border plantings. |
| ANECDOTAL INFORMATION: | 'Rouletii' is the first modern miniature rose and the parent of many cultivated miniature roses. The original specimen was tiny - only 2" high - and had been growing and blooming profusely year after year in the same window for over a 400 years. It is said that when Henri Correvon went to collect the specimen, he arrived to find that the village had been completely destroyed by fire. Fortunately, he found another specimen growing in the neighboring village of Onnens and was able to get a cutting. So this marvelous little rose and parent of the modern miniature roses was nearly "one that got away." |
