Rail Fence

Rail Fence

We put a rail fence along one side of a main lane in the garden, and planted a few roses, hoping that they would grow up and beautify the plain cedar posts used for the fence. Little did we expect the glorious display that resulted. The roses not only grew but completely covered the fence with foliage and flowers.

The rose on the right is 'Will Scarlet' a wonderful Hybrid Musk that spoils us with beautiful red blooms throughout the growing season.

The next rose is 'Dorothy Perkins', a very aggressive once-blooming rambler that has a fantastic display of small pink flowers in the spring.

Next to 'Dorothy Perkins' is another aggressive once-blooming rambler, 'American Pillar', which also has a wonderful display of medium pink flowers with large white eyes. 'Dorothy Perkins' and 'American Pillar' are having an on-going "sumo wrestling match" to see who really owns the rail fence.
